Source: Tea Explorer catalog, 7,306 teas from 40 vendors, fetched 2026-10-01, in-stock listings as of October 1, 2026; shipping and tax excluded. Gaiwan sessions use a 100 ml gaiwan at the doses in the next section; Western cups use 2.5 g per 8 oz cup.

That is 46 full gaiwan sessions, or about 85 Western mugs from the leaf teas, for $38.15. It leaves out sheng (raw) puer and matcha. Only one vendor in the catalog, white2tea, can fill a basket like this under $40.

How we picked the teas

The rules are in the build script and run against the live catalog. Nothing was hand-picked:

  1. In stock only. Out-of-stock rows are skipped.
  2. Real tea, not mixes. Green, white, yellow, oolong, black, sheng puer, shou puer, dark tea and matcha. No herbals, flavoured blends, chai, samplers, gift sets or teaware.
  3. Sample size. 30 g or less, and at least enough leaf for 2 gaiwan sessions of that type.
  4. Variety. At least 7 types, no more than 2 teas of one type, and no two vintages of the same tea.
  5. One vendor. One box means one shipping charge. For each vendor we found the set with the most types under $40, then the cheapest such set, and compared vendors the same way.

382 listings from 19 vendors pass rules 1–3. Our catalog stores one size per product, the size closest to 100 g that is in stock, so a vendor's smaller sample option often does not appear as its own row. Check the product page for a smaller or larger size before you order.

Sampler basket builder

Set a budget, basket size, type count and sessions per sample. The builder picks the cheapest set from the 10 in-stock white2tea teas in the published basket, at most 2 per type. The full 382-listing pool is not part of this page's data.

How many grams a sample needs

A white porcelain gaiwan and a small glass pitcher next to a shallow dish holding a few grams of rolled oolong leaves on a slate tray

A session here means one 100 ml gaiwan, steeped again and again until the leaf is spent. Mei Leaf's guide puts that at 5 infusions for green and white and 8–9 for black and oolong (Mei Leaf brewing guide). Two sessions is the minimum to judge a tea: one to find the right dose and time, one to confirm it.

Sources: green, white, strip oolong and black from Mei Leaf; puer from Yunnan Sourcing; matcha from Ippodo; Western cups at 2.5 g per 8 oz from Harney & Sons. Yellow tea uses the green dose and dark tea the puer dose; we found no separate ratio for either.

Rules of thumb from the table:

  • 10 g covers 2 sessions of green, white, yellow or black, and 2 of strip oolong.
  • 12–18 g covers 2–3 sessions of puer or dark tea. Rolled oolong runs heavier, at 6–6.5 g per 100 ml in Mei Leaf's table (Mei Leaf).
  • 25 g covers 4–7 sessions, or 10 Western cups, enough to compare gaiwan and Western brewing. 8 of the 10 teas in the basket are 25 g listings.
  • Under 10 g is a one-session taster. The catalog has 158 in-stock listings under 10 g, median $1.92 for 7 g. They are cheap but give you one try at the dose. white2tea's own puer guide uses 1 g per 15 ml, 8 g for a 120 ml gaiwan (white2tea).

For every type at every strength, see how many grams of tea per cup.

One vendor or several

Shipping decides this. Our prices exclude it, and a basket built from several shops pays it once per shop.

Run the same rules across every vendor at once and the best basket covers 8 types for $37.90, from 3 vendors (The Steeping Room, Yunnan Sourcing Tea Shop and white2tea):

Against the single-vendor basket, the mixed one costs $0.25 less on tea and adds sheng (raw) puer, but it means 2 extra shipping charges. Unless the extra shops ship free at that order size, one vendor wins. We did not record shipping rates; check each vendor's cart before you order.

Two cases where several vendors make sense:

  1. You want depth in one country. A Japanese-green order from a Japan specialist and a puer order from a Yunnan specialist teach more than ten random types.
  2. One shop already gives you free shipping. Then add samples from a second shop only if they fill a type the first lacks.

Which types to include

Cover the main processing styles before you go deep on one. The basket above follows this order:

  1. Green and white: the least-processed teas, unoxidised or lightly withered.
  2. Oolong: partly oxidised, from light floral to roasted. See oolong oxidation explained.
  3. Black: fully oxidised.
  4. Sheng and shou puer, dark tea: aged or wet-piled teas. See sheng vs shou puer.
  5. Yellow and matcha: worth one slot each if the price fits.

If you already know what flavours you like, use the taste-to-type map in best tea for beginners and spend more of the 10 slots on those types. Browse every listing on /teas.

Sampler packs vs building your own

Ten small white porcelain tasting cups in two rows holding tea infusions that range from pale yellow through amber to dark reddish brown

Some vendors sell ready-made packs. The ones in our catalog are all puer, and their gram counts come from each product description:

Sources: prices from the Tea Explorer catalog, 7,306 teas from 40 vendors, fetched 2026-10-01, as of October 1, 2026; grams from each vendor's product description.

The cheapest in-stock pack works out to $0.30/g against $0.18/g for our basket. A pack is the better buy for depth in one category: 10 puer teas at 20 g each is 3.3 sessions apiece at 6 g per 100 ml. For breadth across 7 types, build your own. Plum Deluxe also sells a 3-sample pack for $5.00, 2–3 cups per sample, without a stated weight (Plum Deluxe).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really try 10 teas for under $40?

Yes. As of October 1, 2026, the best qualifying basket in our catalog costs $38.15 before shipping for 10 in-stock teas, 7 types and 214 g of leaf from white2tea. Only one vendor in the catalog, white2tea, can fill a basket like this under $40.

How many grams should a tea sample be?

At least two gaiwan sessions: about 7–8 g for green, white or black, 10 g for strip oolong and 12 g for puer. A 25 g sample covers 4–7 gaiwan sessions or 10 Western cups at 2.5 g each.

Is a vendor sampler pack cheaper than building your own?

Per gram, the cheapest in-stock pack in our catalog costs $0.30/g against $0.18/g for our 10-tea basket. The packs we found are puer-only, so they buy depth in one category, not breadth across 7 types.

Should I order samples from one shop or several?

One, unless a second shop fills a type the first lacks. The best mixed-vendor basket covers 8 types for $37.90, but it comes from 3 shops and each charges its own shipping.
