For someone still finding their tea

Harney & Sons Teabag & Honey Sampler

Fourteen blends, four bags of each, so 56 teabags, plus ten honey sticks in a black and gold box. The range runs from Japanese Sencha and Orange Pekoe to Paris and Hot Cinnamon Spice, and it includes caffeine-free Egyptian Chamomile, Organic Peppermint and Decaffeinated Earl Grey for evenings. Four bags of each blend is enough to try a tea twice and decide.

Pair with
A mug-sized infuser for when they move from bags to loose leaf.
Check first
Bags are the point here; a loose-leaf drinker will want a tin set instead.

For a loose-leaf drinker

Hario ChaCha Kyusu Maru glass teapot

A heatproof borosilicate glass pot with a removable stainless steel strainer, sold in 300, 450 and 700 ml sizes. The glass shows the leaf opening and the liquor darkening, which teaches strength by eye faster than any timer. The 300 ml size is a two-cup pot for green or white tea; the 700 ml size handles a western pot of black tea.

Pair with
A tin of loose green or oolong tea they have not tried.
Check first
Choose the size by how many cups they pour at once. The glass and lid are made in Japan; Hario lists the strainer as made in China.

For someone who drinks green tea

Fellow Stagg EKG electric kettle

A gooseneck kettle that heats to any temperature from 104 to 212°F and holds it for up to 60 minutes. Green tea brewed at a full boil turns bitter; this kettle makes 175°F the same effort as 212°F. The narrow spout pours slowly enough for a gaiwan or a small kyusu.

Pair with
A printed copy of our steeping chart taped inside the box.
Check first
It holds 0.9 liters, which is plenty for one or two people and short for a family teapot.

For an iced tea drinker

Hario Mizudashi cold brew tea pot, 1000 ml

A borosilicate glass carafe with a fine polyester mesh filter column. Put leaf in the filter, fill with cold water, leave it in the refrigerator overnight. Cold steeping pulls less bitterness out of green and black tea than hot brewing, so the result is smooth without sugar. Hario lists it as dishwasher safe.

Pair with
A bag of loose sencha or Assam to cold brew first.
Check first
Not for the microwave, oven or stovetop. Fine-cut teas can cloud the brew; whole leaf works best.

For a Japanese green tea fan

Ippodo Tea digital gift card

Ippodo has sold tea in Kyoto since 1717 and ships matcha, sencha, gyokuro and hojicha from its US site. The virtual gift card comes in three amounts and lets the recipient choose between a matcha can, a bag of sencha or a kyusu. It is the safe way to give matcha without guessing their grade.

Pair with
A handwritten note naming one tea to start with, such as a 20 g box of Ikuyo matcha.
Check first
It is valid on Ippodo's US store. Confirm the amount and delivery email before you pay.

For someone who likes to choose

Harney & Sons digital gift card

Delivered by email as a unique 16-digit code. It works on harney.com and at Harney's two shops, in SoHo in New York City and in Millerton, New York. Harney's catalog covers blends, single-estate black teas, greens and herbals, so the card fits almost any tea drinker.

Pair with
Print the code inside a card with a short list of three teas you think they would like.
Check first
Harney says gift cards cannot be used for subscription products, coupon codes or loyalty rewards.

Wrap it so it gets used

Teaware that stays in its box until March was the wrong gift. Three ways to make the first cup happen on Christmas morning.

  1. Put tea inside the teaware

Fill the teapot or cold brew pot with a small bag of loose tea before you wrap it, so it can be used the moment it is opened.

    Work out how much leaf
  2. Write the recipe on the tag

Grams, water temperature and minutes for the tea you included, e.g. 3 g, 175°F, 1 minute for sencha. Our chart has the numbers for each tea type.

    Open the steeping chart
  3. Print the gift card code

An emailed code is easy to miss in December. Print it, fold it into a card and name the first tea you would buy with it.

Check before you buy

Bags or loose leaf?

Look in their cupboard. A drawer of tea bags means the sampler; tins of loose leaf mean the teapot or kettle.

Do they already own a kettle?

A variable-temperature kettle is a big upgrade from a stovetop kettle and a small one from another electric kettle with presets.

Why water temperature matters

Hard water?

Scale builds up fast in a kettle in hard-water areas. Add a note on descaling if you give one.

Shipping and returns

Check each maker's current delivery estimate and return window on its own site. We do not track shipping cutoffs.

Too late to ship?

Two gifts on this list arrive by email, and a local tea shop needs no shipping at all. An emailed gift card reaches them in minutes; if you send a gift notice for a physical item, the tea itself still moves on the maker's shipping schedule.

Christmas tea gift questions

What is a good Christmas gift for someone who already has a lot of tea?

Give a tool instead of more tea: a variable-temperature kettle or a glass teapot changes how every tea they own tastes. A gift card also works, because they can buy the one tea they are missing.

Is a tea sampler or a single tea the better gift?

A sampler, if you don't know what they drink. The Harney & Sons box has 14 blends with four bags each, which is enough to find a favorite. Buy a single tea only when you know their taste.

What temperature should water be for green tea?

Most Japanese and Chinese green teas brew best between about 160 and 180°F. Boiling water extracts more bitterness. Our steeping chart lists temperatures by tea type.

Can I give matcha without knowing which grade they like?

Give an Ippodo gift card instead of a specific tin. Matcha grades differ a lot in price and bitterness, and the recipient can choose.

How we chose these gifts

We read each maker’s product page and gift card terms on October 1, 2026 and took sizes, materials and limits from those pages. We chose gifts for different kinds of tea drinker rather than six versions of the same thing. We have not tested every item.
