Start with 25 g samples, then buy cakes. As of October 1, 2026, the cheapest in-stock 357 g sheng cake in our catalog costs $27.75 and the cheapest shou cake $19.00. Using our rules, $100 buys 3 teas and 700 g (young sheng, aged sheng and shou), about 116 gongfu sessions at 6 g. Median price per gram is $0.37 for 2021–2026 sheng and $0.21 for shou of the same years.

What the catalog shows

We filtered the Tea Explorer catalog, 7,306 teas from 40 vendors, fetched 2026-10-01 to in-stock sheng (raw) and shou (ripe) puer listings of 20 g or more with a price per gram: 1,926 listings (1,339 sheng, 587 shou) from 20 vendors. Sampler packs, multi-cake sets, tea-club parcels and empty gift boxes are excluded (116 rows). If sheng and shou are new terms, start with sheng vs shou puer.

Two numbers drive a budget plan. Shou costs less than sheng in every harvest-year bucket. And big cakes cost less per gram: the median 200 g sheng cake costs 1.7 times as much per gram as the median 357 g one.

Source: Tea Explorer catalog, 7,306 teas from 40 vendors, fetched 2026-10-01, in-stock listings of 20 g or more, as of October 1, 2026. "Middle half" is the 25th to 75th percentile. 93 listings without a harvest year are left out; the oldest dated tea is from 1970.

What the table shows, and only that:

  • Sheng peaks in the middle. The highest sheng median is the 2011–2015 bucket. Sheng from 2010 or earlier sits at $0.34/g, below both middle buckets.
  • Only the oldest shou costs more. Shou from 2010 or earlier has the highest shou median, $0.25/g; the three later buckets sit within 3 cents of each other.
  • The spread is wide. In every sheng bucket the top quarter starts at $0.60/g or more, so the year alone does not set the price.

This is a snapshot of asking prices, not a price history, and it does not show that a cake gains value as it ages. Yunnan Sourcing supplies 66% of the dated listings, so the table leans on one vendor. TeaDB's warning on modern factory cakes: "Don't buy these teas now and expect them to appreciate in the same manner" as older ones did (TeaDB). Buy to drink.

The 357 g cake is the standard size: Wikipedia lists 357 g, 400 g and 500 g as the most common cake weights, sold seven to a bundle as "seven units cake tea" (Wikipedia: Pu'er tea). That bundle is a tong; seven 357 g cakes make 2,499 g. white2tea presses 200 g cakes and bundles five per tong (white2tea).

At $27.75, the cheapest sheng cake works out to $0.47 per 6 g session, since a 357 g cake holds 59 sessions (white2tea on session size). The cheapest shou cake is $0.32 per session. A full tong of the cheapest sheng cake would cost $194.25. Do not start there: you have not tasted it yet.

Samples first

white2tea's buyer's guide says it plainly: try "a lot of different samples (or at least smaller purchases) that fit comfortably within your budget before you commit to large quantities of tea" (white2tea).

Of the 22 vendors with in-stock puer, 9 sell at least one as a 25 g option (1,411 products). Yunnan Sourcing alone has 73% of them.

What a 25 g sample costs, as of October 1, 2026:

  • Median price: $12.25.
  • Per-gram premium: the median sample costs 1.4 times the full-size price per gram; the middle half runs 1.2–1.6 times.
  • Sessions: 25 g is 4 full 6 g sessions, enough to judge a tea twice.

Samples of all three teas in the $100 plan below cost $16.75, less than any one of the three cakes. Reject one cake after tasting and the samples have paid for themselves. For a broader sample basket, see tea sampler strategy.

Three budgets: $100, $250, $500

The selection runs against the catalog, not hand-picked:

  1. In stock, 100–500 g, pressed (cake, tuo or brick), with a 25 g sample on sale so you can taste first.
  2. Three slots. Young sheng from 2021 or later, aged sheng from 2014 or earlier, and shou. The aged cut-off follows white2tea's note that aged character appears at around 7–8 years and grows "more dramatic and noticeable after 10-12 years" (white2tea).
  3. Split. 40% young sheng, 35% aged sheng, 25% shou. Each slot buys the most expensive tea that fits its share; ties go to the lower price per gram. No two vintages of the same tea.

Price is not a quality score. The rule just spends each slot's share; taste the samples and swap anything you dislike for the next tea down.

Per gram, the $100 plan costs $0.141 and the $500 plan $0.240: more money buys pricier tea, not just more of it. For the most leaf per dollar, buy 357 g shou and young sheng cakes from the vendor table instead.

Store it before you buy more

A collection needs a stable spot before it needs more cakes. The numbers, in full in how to store tea:

  • Humidity: 60–70% relative humidity is the target; above 75% encourages mold and below 50% dries the tea out (Speciality Tea Europe). "Dry storage" means under 80% (WYMM Tea).
  • Temperature: around 20–25 °C favours aging (Speciality Tea Europe). TeaDB reports home setups running 65–75% humidity at 16–21 °C (TeaDB).
  • Odor and light: white2tea's list of hazards is "no strong odors nearby", "no direct sunlight" and no extremes of heat, dry, wet or cold (white2tea).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a starter puer collection cost?

As of October 1, 2026, our catalog rules buy 3 teas and 700 g for $98.75: young sheng, aged sheng and shou. That is about 116 sessions at 6 g, or $0.85 each. Tasting 25 g samples of all three first adds $16.75.

Is shou cheaper than sheng?

Yes, in every harvest-year bucket in our catalog. For 2021–2026 teas the median is $0.21/g for shou against $0.37/g for sheng; for 357 g cakes it is $0.17/g against $0.31/g.

Does older sheng always cost more?

No. In our catalog the 2011–2015 bucket has the highest sheng median, and sheng from 2010 or earlier has a median of $0.34/g, lower than both middle buckets. These are current asking prices from 20 vendors, not a record of how any one cake's price changed.

Should I buy samples or a full cake first?

Samples. A 25 g sample costs a median $12.25 and holds 4 sessions; per gram it costs 1.4 times the cake price. 9 of the 22 vendors with in-stock puer sell 25 g options.
