Phoenix's Tea Scene

Phoenix proper has a small tea scene, and most of it sits within a few blocks of downtown. The Japanese Friendship Garden runs reserved chanoyu in its Musoan Tea House from October to May plus docent-led tastings of sencha, genmaicha and hojicha; The Farish House serves a three-course afternoon tea with 16 imported teas every Saturday; and Songbird next door pours more than 25 loose-leaf teas from Tucson's Maya Tea Company. Crete Tea Room on McDowell Road covers the matcha, hojicha and wakocha latte side. The metro's best-known formal tea rooms are in Scottsdale, Carefree and Glendale, outside the city limits.

Roosevelt Row holds Songbird Coffee & Tea House and The Farish House, two historic homes on the same block of North 3rd Street that share a parking lot. The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix is a few minutes west in Hance Park, on North 3rd Avenue. Crete Tea Room is the outlier, on East McDowell Road about two miles east.

Phoenix Tea Tips

Book chanoyu early in the season

The Japanese Friendship Garden only runs chanoyu from October through May, with limited seats per session, and may cancel a ceremony that misses minimum enrollment a week out. The cheaper tea tasting also runs only until May and also sells out.

Saturday is the only afternoon tea day downtown

The Farish House serves afternoon tea on Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM only, and bookings close at 5 PM the Friday before. The rest of the week it runs as a dinner bistro and wine bar.

Pair a garden visit with Roosevelt Row

The Japanese Friendship Garden on North 3rd Avenue and the Songbird and Farish House block on North 3rd Street are close enough to combine in one morning.

Buy leaf at Songbird

Songbird sells its 25-plus loose-leaf teas to take home, so a cup you like at the counter can leave with you in a bag.
