The Republic of Tea was started in 1992 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler, the founders of Banana Republic, with Bill Rosenzweig. Ron Rubin bought it in 1994 and his family still owns it. The company is based in Larkspur, California, and in 2016 it also bought Upton Tea Imports, the Massachusetts loose tea seller.
Its product is mostly bagged tea in round metal tins, around 350 varieties, sold online and in grocery and gift stores. It was the first tea company certified organic by the USDA. Buy a tin of All Day Earl Grey or Daily Green Tea first; the SuperHerb and SuperDigest herbal lines are the caffeine-free side.
